Michael Walker, Grillmaster — Faculty Heights Neighborhood National Night Out, 2018

National Night Out, Faculty Heights

Neighborhood Meet & Greet

Neighbors Meet & Greet Local Polititians, Community Peace Officers

Last Tuesday evening, the Faculty Heights neighborhood joined thousands of others across the U.S. to celebrate National Night Out. [Sidenote: National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.] Neighborhood residents gathered at host Miranda Arana’s home [Sidenote: Ms. Arana has been welcoming us to her home for our twice annual neighborhood gatherings for decades. For this we are so very grateful. Thank you, Miranda!] to share food and fellowship. Ward 4 councilman Bill Hickman dropped in to answer questions about city construction projects, traffic calming, the UNP TIF, and other concerns. Norman PD’s Lieutenant Cary Bryant and one of his officers also joined the gathering to take questions and address concerns.

As usual, Michael Walker served as grillmaster, serving up curry burgers and frankfurters to the hungry crowd. The serving table stood laden with delicious entrées and desserts brought by the guests to the potluck-style picnic.

After friends and neighbors finished eating, they lingered in conversation while small children ran about the spacious backyard. The several swings and their distracted parents encouraged the kind of unstructured play that seems to be vanishing into history these days.
